According to the media’s representation of Asian language, the language used by Asian community has been largely misrepresented. The picture with “Learn Chinese is 5 minutes” title tries to jeer Asian language with inaccurate information. The phrases illustrated in the picture are not legitimate Mandarin or Cantonese. Even though border around the picture are added to the picture as a decoration, it is not Chinese letters but Japanese characters. Similar to the picture before, picture with Confucius sayings contains appalling stereotype on language that discriminates Asian languages to be alien. The “I speak Engrish” picture characterizes Asian as unskilled English speaker with the exotic accent. An Asian language stereotype often underestimates the Asian language to be a universal language throughout the continent and mocks the Asian accents. Asian stereotypes on appearances are widely spread in the media including comics that are produced in United States.
The most prevalent stereotypes are that all Asians look the same and they all have the small slanted eyes. The culture is also distorted by costumes which are wild discrimination to the individuals and the cultural community. Asian stereotypes on appearance can be easily accepted through one of the biggest media which is comics. According to the picture with the yellow background, different kinds of stereotypes are depicted through different comics. For example, the Lotus Blossom plays into the stereotype that Asian women are passive and docile. Asian depictions in comics are often the minor characters that contain number of misrepresentation not often noticed in the big picture of things. Even though some people do not realized the stereotypes on Asian community, it is because most easily accessed media has been already contaminated with the Asian stereotypes. Similar to the stereotype that exists in Asian countries, Asian driving stereotypes are big in the media especially on female. The most offensive illustration of Asian driving stereotypes is the picture of man with “WE SHOULDN’T MAKE FUN OF ASIAN DRIVERS. AIN’T THEIR FAULT THEY GOT CHINKY EYES.” In this picture, the Asian people are not only stereotyped to be a bad driver but also includes invalid reasoning that the small eyes are the reason for the stereotype. Other illustration of Asian driver establishes stereotype that all of the Asian drivers are unskilled drivers. The stereotype that Asians are eager to succeed and the stereotypes related to academics are one of the prevailing stereotypes on Asians. Society usually describes Asian parents to be cold hearted and someone who pushes children to be successful. The movie, "Akeelah and the Bee" that was commercialized in 2006, included Asian stereotype through Asian child who was competing against Akeelah and strictly controlled by the father to win. Pictures presented in the studying stereotype slide clearly show how media has influence society that now Asian people are characterized as almost studying machines. There are pictures of old Asian man with a green background who is misrepresenting the Asian’s aspiration to succeed and earn good scores in class. These stereotypical pictures presented in the media exaggerate some of the individuals’ identity and tries to conform those characteristics to bigger community. |
