According to the article, Stereotypes of Asian American Students, Asian population has been increased drastically from 1980s to 2010s. The increase in the population led society to more focus on the Asian ethic groups and accordingly the Asian stereotypes grew rampantly. The stereotypes on Asian race varied from educational stereotypes to sociocultural stereotypes. Educational stereotypes are most common and problematic stereotype. The expectations from community towards Asian students harm not only high achieving Asians but also low achieving Asians. High achieving Asian students receive too much pressure because of the expectations and they struggle to seek for help. From the article by Malena Amusa, Asian Women Face 'Model Minority' Pressures, Eliza Noh’s sister committed suicide because of the depression from academics pressure. Eliza Noh said “the stereotype of Asian cultures being hard-wired for success creates a dangerous ‘model minority’ image”(Amusa). Although the grade by itself is not important but the learning and gaining knowledge is important, the stereotype makes Asian community to more focus on the grade. Other than the suicide problems, Asian stereotype also limits growing students’ potential. Asian student who does not follow Asian educational stereotypes, Ellie Williams said, “While under the label of the model minority, Asian Americans can never reach their full potential”(Williams). Stereotype makes Asian community to be a homogeneous group. The article, Report Takes Aim at ‘Model Minority’ Stereotype of Asian-American Students, shows how there are people trying to understand the inaccuracy of Asian stereotypes. New York University education professor, Robert T. Teranishi, reported that there are a lot Asian students showing excellence in academics; however, there is same amount of students who are struggling at the bottom of the curve. The professor expressed his goal is to “have people understand that the population is very diverse”(Mathews). Like the movement from New York University, our society should understand the individuality of Asian community rather than estimate their characteristics by stereotypes.
