Most of the societies contain different stereotypes on different people that often represent the specific individual as a one uniform community. Except for the individuals with the most authority and power, male Caucasian, various groups of people are misrepresented by the stereotypes. Even though Asians have lived in America for more than 150 years, Asians are one of the ethnic groups, who are still misguided by the community as an outsiders and foreigners. Asians are still considered as outsiders who are looking for an acceptance to American society. Even though Asians living in America should be treated as different individuals, their personal identities are often estimated by their racial heritage. Various different examples of stereotypes exposed in the media clearly examines that the identity given to individuals by society is being largely determined by race.
Attending to middle school and high school in the United States, I was naturally exposed to the Asian stereotypes. I was curious how some people could estimate other people’s characteristics through their culture and race. Although I was as different as one of the individuals in the United States, I got offended when my personality was determined by my race. Through my autoethnography, I wanted to show how personality or characteristics should not be determined by the race. |
